Day 10 – Hanging in the heat

It’s been HOT in the city.  I’m not one to complain about heat, but 37 before the humidity is crazy!  But there’s no such thing as climate change…

If there’s an upside to all this heat, it’s that drying clothes outside is pretty much as fast as using a washer.  I hung sheets out to dry on the weekend, and they dried in under two hours.  So if you’re not already drying your laundry outdoors, now is the time to start.

I hang my laundry year-round.  And not just the major items – I hang it all, even the cloth diaper wipes.  It didn’t start out intentionally.  When we bought our house in 2006, it didn’t come with appliances.  We planned on buying a washer and dryer, but we dropped a lot of coin on a high-end, uber-energy-efficient washer, so we held off on the dryer.  And  6 years later, we still don’t have one.  I really don’t mind the extra time, but then I actually enjoy doing laundry (I hate vacuuming, so it balances out).

When I started this daily green resolution blog challenge, I said I was, from time to time, going to take advantage of posting about green things I already do.  Today is one of those days.  I will continue, for the next year, even if we buy a house that comes with a clothes dryer, to hang ALL of our laundry.

  1. How about wearing things multiple days? Using towels for a week? I’m guessing you already do that, but it’s incredible how many people think things need to go into the laundry once they’ve been used just once.

  2. Agreed Jay! Thanks to my lack of discipline when it comes to housekeeping, we often use towels for a week, sheets for a couple of weeks, etc… And I’m totally into wearing things multiple times, provided my kid doesn’t smear too much food on my shirt… 🙂
