Today’s green pledge is a fun one. I figure from time to time I have to pledge to do something that I’m really going to enjoy, otherwise it will be hard to stick to over 300 of them!
This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Haliburton Art and Craft Festival ( http://www.railsendgallery.com/acfestival.php). I’m a huge fan of craft shows, not because I have a love of tea cozies or home-made bird houses, but because I like supporting local artists. Shopping is much more guilt-free when you know that your product was crafted locally.. My purchases at the show included two lovely ceramic necklaces (jewelry is my vice…) – one by Dotti Potts (http://dottipotts.com) and one by Earth & Fire Pottery (http://www.earthandfirepottery.ca). We also got my daughter a wooden toy car and a sun hat. We were tempted by some larger home decor items, but given that we don’t know where we’ll be living in a few months, it seemed unwise.
If you’re not already a craft show junkie, I would encourage you to check one out. If you’re in the Toronto area, One of A Kind Show is outstanding (http://www.oneofakindshow.com/). Or if you’re not into the large venue approach to shopping, you can always seek out local artists and artisans in your community.
The values to supporting local artists are many. You’re putting money back into your community, instead of into big box stores. Often times materials are sourced locally, and many artisans may seek out green products. And of course, there’s the feel good value of shaking hands with the person who made what you’re buying.
So my green resolution for today is to support local artists. By shopping! 🙂
